Polish and Hungarian to HTML character converter

As some of you may already know, I'm maintaining www.lengyel13.hu, a website that has mixed, Polish and Hungarian text. Both of these languages use special characters and as such, when you add them to a website, you will have to use their ASCII equivalent in your HTML code, otherwise some browsers might not interpret them correctly. For long time I have done this change to the original text manually in HTML using the find and replace function of my HTML editor, however this took a considerate amount of my valuable time, and I was sure there has to be another way, so I came up with this idea: why don't I create a Polish and Hungarian to HTML character converter myself?

How to stop Blogger from redirecting to local domain extensions

Ok, just a quick one today. I realised Blogger is now redirecting to local domain extensions according to the location of the visitor (ie. .co.uk for the UK instead of .com). The problem with this for me was that I needed redirections to my own blog in the code that could not be made dynamic that way, so I had to look for a way to make Blogger always redirect to the .com domain extension.

Even or odd number validation with PHP

The other day, while I was writing up some PHP code, I ran into a really cool way of identifying if a number is even or odd (refer to the link further down below). I needed it as I looped the creation of a couple of divs and wanted the odd numbered ones to be floated left, the evens to the right.

Two new website designs - done!

They've both been ready for a while now, just didn't take the time to post about them, but hey, I feel this it the perfect time for it, right? ;)

One of them was created for a good friend, another photographer, just about to start opening her wings in this beautiful profession:

How to find your facebook id or facebook admin id (aka fb:admin)

Actually I realised that there is quite a lot of false or misleading information around this subject. Finding out one's facebook id or facebook admin id (aka fb:admins) apparently creates a lot of confusion as facebook itself does not provide a comprehensive help page with this subject. What would you need it for, you may ask. Well, some facebook social plugins, like the facebook "Like" button for example, need it in order to work properly.

So here it is, select one of these 2 easy ways to get it:

A little help with Internet Explorer Compatibility Mode

We all know that Internet Explorer 7 and 8 don't always play very well with all websites, so Microsoft has introduced Compatibility Mode for Internet Explorer. While building a new website just now, I stumbled upon a very good article about what Internet Explorer Compatibility Mode is all about. The article titled Understanding Compatibility Modes in Internet Explorer 8 explains it very well. I used the meta tag with "IE=edge" that asks the browser to "Always use the latest standards rendering mode". You might also want to refer back to one of my old posts to find out how to cheat Internet Explorer to do different stuff than other browsers: Internet Explorer CSS "cheats".

iCloud Photo Stream To Folder (skip iPhoto)

I'll be honest with you: since I have my iMac, I tried hard but just could not get used to how iPhoto arranges photos (using events instead of folders). Thus I started using Picasa for Mac that I was really pleased with. However, the only way I can import photos in Picasa is to plug in my iPhone.

To make use of iCloud's Photo Stream feature where photos taken on your iPhone get uploaded to iCloud automatically over the air and so can be displayed immediately on your Mac or PC, without the need to wire connect your iPhone to it, I was looking for a way to either find the Photo Stream folder location on the iMac, or for Picasa to connect with iCloud directly. Well, as it came out, the combination of the two can be made possible with Automator!

Facebook Cover Photo Dimensions

Ok, so here I am again, after most of my holidays and travels completed, a post that I wanted to add some time back already but wasn't sure how to word it. Finally I came up with a very simple way of saying this.

I have looked around on the net but mostly the explanation of how facebook cover photos are sized was not very easy to understand. So finally I simply took a screen shot of mine removed the inside and here you go, the plane image you'll see attached here below.
